The following are some things you may want to do in the beginning of this year to get yourself in a position of newness and renewal:
- Fast and Pray – Abstain from food (please consult your physician if you plan to abstain from food) and/or things that have your attention on a regular basis that inhibit you from spending time with God for a set period of time. Examples would be the internet, television, negative thoughts, etc. In that period of time be specific about what you are fasting about. Examples of specific areas you are fasting for could include: God’s purpose for your life, direction for your life, family members, your job, the spiritual health of your church, improving your leadership style, etc. Fasting will give you that renewal and newness for God to pour into you His spirit to not only give you the direction you need but also the power to accomplish your objectives this year.
- Right Wrongs – Ask for forgiveness if you wronged anyone in the past year. Seek the Lord on if He wants you to go to those individuals and ask for forgiveness or just in a prayer to the Lord. When you “right wrongs” there is a purging that happens that frees you to come to the Lord and ask Him for whatever is on your heart. When you have resentment, jealousy, hatred, etc in your heart it becomes difficult to come before the Lord and seek His direction for things in your life. You can do this during your fast or even before you fast.
- Get An Assessment From Your Team – I tend to suggest to leaders during this time to conduct an exercise with their teams to determine what the team thinks the leaders’ strengths and weaknesses (areas of improvement) are. You can get this assessment various ways. You can have your team submit their comments anonymously, conduct a meeting with everyone to have them share their thoughts in a group forum, or sit down with each of them individually and get this feedback. You will need to discern what is best due to your team’s dynamics. This feedback will help you understand the things you do and well the areas you will need to improve upon in the upcoming year. I will write a blog in the future on additional resources for this activity.
